Ontario has passed Bill 60, a new housing law that changes how renting and evictions work across the province.
What Bill 60 Changes
1. Evictions for unpaid rent can start faster Landlords can now file after 7 days of missed rent. This used to take longer, and one missed paycheck can now trigger the process much sooner.
2. No compensation if 120 days’ notice is given If a landlord gives 120 days’ notice, they no longer have to offer the tenant money or another unit when asking them to leave.
3. Tenants must pay 50% of arrears to raise issues At a hearing for unpaid rent, tenants must pay half of what they owe upfront or they can’t bring up concerns like repairs or harassment.
4. Less time to appeal The window to appeal or request a review is now 15 days, cut from 30.
5. Faster evictions for repeated issues If someone keeps paying late, causes damage, or creates safety problems, the eviction process moves quicker.
