Australia is introducing a new law that bans social media accounts for anyone under 16. The goal is to limit online harm and reduce the impact of addictive algorithms, predators, and mental-health risks on young people.
What the Law Does
Social media companies must block users under 16 from creating accounts. If they don’t take reasonable steps to verify ages, they can be fined up to 50 million dollars.
This applies to major platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube.
Not a Full Internet Ban
Young people can still watch public videos or view open content without logging in. What they cannot do is create an account, post, comment, message, follow, or interact.
When It Starts
The law takes effect on December 10, 2025.Some platforms have already begun removing under-16 accounts to prepare.
Why This Matters
If the ban works in Australia, other governments may adopt similar rules. Critics warn this could be the first step toward broader censorship or tighter internet control.
